Counterpunch, November 6, 2020 Surreal Politeness on “P”BS It was bizarre, surreal even, to watch Election Night on the “Public” Broadcasting System. It was like sitting in a family dinner or a church group meeting where too many of the attendees were right-wing and/or militantly nonpolitical to safely discuss anything political in an honest and [...]
Counterpunch, October 30, 2020 The cable news talking heads seem obsessed with Joe Biden’s “significant” lead over Donald Trump in the national polls – as if this lead signifies a certain coming Biden victory in the presidential election. Also feeding the narrative that Biden is likely to win are stories and film clips of millions [...]
Counterpunch, October 26, 2020 I am an author, political commentator, teacher, and historian who prefers in “normal times” to spend most of my time researching, writing, and teaching. This summer and fall, however, I’ve been out protesting with Refuse Fascism raising the demand “Trump-Pence Out Now” – out immediately. That’s because these are not “normal” times. The [...]
Counterpunch, October 23, 2020 The irony on Thursday morning cable news was too delicious not to savor. MSDNC anchor Halle Jackson could barely contain her glee over how former president Barack Obama had finally “taken the gloves off” and gone after Donald Trump by name while campaigning for Joe Biden the previous day. I have [...]
Counterpunch, October 20, 2020 “Overwhelming” Evil in a Masked Nation of Lines Every few weeks or so for the last three years, I have engaged in the masochistic exercise of seeing whether Donald Trump’s latest outrages have significantly hurt his approval rating. The answer is almost always the same: not really. Which is depressing, for [...]
Counterpunch, October 16, 2020 This might be a good time for Americans to stop masochistically worshipping at the feet of their nation’s authoritarian Constitution. A proto-fascistic genocidal racist maniac and anti-science eco-exterminist determined to kill two million more Americans with COVID-19 sits in the White House thanks in no small part due to the absurdly [...]
Counterpunch, October 13, 2020 In October of 2016, then United States president Barack Obama told Democratic vice presidential candidate Tim Kaine that the Hillary Clinton campaign had to “keep a fascist out of the White House.” The 44th President of the United States had an accurate understanding of Trump – a president in the making Obama [...]
Counterpunch, October 7, 2020 No Sympathy for the Devil Many online liberals and lefties celebrated news that the pandemo-fascist Donald Trump contracted his own virus. I’ve held back. It’s not that I find wishing bad things for the president morally offensive. I think doing so is politically problematic, but I don’t see it as morally [...]
Counterpunch, October 4, 2020 Future NBA Owner Barack Obama: “Voting is the Most Important Action We Can Take” One of the Democratic Party’s main missions is to keep people off the streets no matter how urgent it is for the masses to flood the nation’s roads, sidewalks, town halls and public plazas. As failed state [...]
Counterpunch, September 28, 2020 “We Want to Get Rid of the Ballots” We are in the middle of a rolling authoritarian and even fascist coup that is working with and through the United States Constitution to no small degree. To be sure, Trump is doing everything in his considerable power to undermine a “normal” bourgeois-constitutional [...]
