Last February, ZNet published an essay in which I cited the social-psychological theory of cognitive dissonance in arguing that many right wing elites probably don’t believe much of the propagandistic nonsense they put out on the political airwaves, including the preposterous notion that the current centrist, state-capitalist corporate-neoliberal president of the United States, Barack Obama, is a socialist.
